Let’s catch up with some of our recent graduates! We’ll start with The Plot Twists, who graduated in January 2021. First up is Siri Alderson!
Siri, how did you fill your time when you weren’t working on packets?
Working as a librarian, going on walks, reading, catching up with friends, spending time with my cats!
How did you hear about the Hamline MFAC program?
I was doing research on different writing programs and Hamline MFAC’s vibrant community and faculty really stood out to me. After reading more about the student experience, it felt like a place I could belong and get inspired. My gut told me that it was the right place for me, and I’m so happy to say that I was right!
What was your writing experience prior to entering the program?
I was an avid writer when I was young, then majored in Creative Writing in college. Over the years, I was writing less and less, so Hamline MFAC felt like a great opportunity for me to get back into a writing routine, connect with an ongoing writing community and rediscover myself as a writer.
Tell us a favorite residency memory.
My first residency was virtual, so I loved coming to campus for my second residency and getting to meet everyone in person for the first time, including my cohort. I also loved having the opportunity to visit the Kerlan Collection.
Can you share a little about your creative thesis?
My creative thesis is a YA novel titled Marissa. When Claire runs into Angie, her former high school classmate, it feels like everything is finally falling into place–especially when Angie invites Claire to join her for a weekend away at her family cabin. But after Claire learns that Angie’s best friend, Marissa, drowned at the cabin last year, Claire starts to experience strange events that leave her questioning everything.
What did you write your extended critical essay about?
I wrote about emotional abuse in YA fiction, including examining the impact of emotional abuse on teens, the ways that it can present itself in different types of relationships, and the importance of writing about this topic with accuracy and care.
What changes have you noticed in your writing since MFAC?
I’ve grown so much as a writer. I feel more confident in myself, my voice, and my writing process. Even when I feel like I’m getting stuck, I know I can find my way through because I have the tools to help me as well as wonderful writing friends to turn to for support. Writing is a big part of my life now, in the best way!
Any thoughts for those considering the program?
It’s an amazing program and a magical experience. I highly recommend doing it!
